ABOUT THOUSAND OFFERING
Offering of 1000 Tormas “垛玛”千供
The Tibetan torma or ‘sacrificial cake’ is a symbolic ritual offering made from dough, representing food offering. The essence of the torma is the dharmadhatu, which is the utterly pure nature of the world, the indivisible union of emptiness and wisdom. As for the term torma, Guru Padmasambhava said: “Tor means to give without attachment or grasping of the mind, and ma means what is given is completely present to the perception of the guests.” By offering the torma, we generate positive feelings which are an antidote to miserliness, and therefore accumulate infinite merit and help to eliminate the suffering of hunger in sentient beings.
Offering of 1000 Lamps
With light brightly shining, abolishing the darkness, we make light offering to the Three Jewels and the enlightened deities who dispels the darkness of ignorance. According to the scriptures, one receives many benefits through offering light: One becomes like the light in the world. One achieves the gods' eye. One is able to eliminate the darkness of ignorance. One receives the illumination of wisdom; even in cyclic existence one will never experience darkness. One quickly attains enlightenment. Those who make 1,000 light offerings will be reborn in the world when Maitreya Buddha shows the deed of gaining enlightenment and receive his first Dharma Teaching. Offering light, in particular, is a special door of dependent-arising to quickly complete the accumulation of merit and receive blessings. It is said in the Root Tantra of Chakrasamvara, "If you wish for sublime realisation, offer hundreds of lights".
Offering 1000 Incense sticks
The aroma of incense, typically derived from herbs, flowers and other natural sources, purifies the atmosphere and inspires us to develop a pure mind. By offering incense, one makes an offering of beautiful fragrance to the Buddha and deities. This offering symbolises morality, ethics and discipline which are the basic causes and conditions from which pure enlightened qualities are cultivated. By offering incense, the merit accumulated helps bring about the realisation and perfection of the profound scent of discipline. It has been said that whoever has perfected the discipline is surrounded by a sweet fragrance.
Offering of 1000 Jewelled Parasols
The jewelled parasol or precious umbrella is a traditional Indian symbol of both protection and royalty. The parasol protects the bearer from the scorching heat of the sun. Therefore by offering the parasol, we receive protection against the heat of defilements and suffering. The coolness of its shade symbolises protection from harms of illness, obstacles, spiritually harmful forces and life, and all kinds of temporary and enduring sufferings of the three lower realms, and the realms of men and gods in future lives.
Offering of 1000 Victory Banners
The Victory Banner represents the victory of the Buddha's teachings over death, ignorance, disharmony and all harmful and malevolent forces. By offering the victory banner to the Three Jewels and the deities, we receive incredible blessings to overcome our defilements through practice of the Dharma. Making this offering symbolises the victory over obstacles and negativities. The roofs of Tibetan monasteries are often decorated with victory banners of different shapes and sizes symbolising the Buddha's victory over the four maras.
